This project consists of interviews with Rev. Hugh Cowans and Julia Cowans concerning the civil right movements in Kentucky and the Appalachian Region. Topics discussed include the United Mine Workers, coal mining, strikes, racism, African American coal miners, African Americans' social and economic conditions, coal camps, company stores, Ku Klux Klan,  National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
