One of the biggest issues with doing research on the Vietnam War is the terminology. Any of the following are used to refer to what Americans call "Vietnam:"

• Vietnam War
• Vietnam Conflict
• The Second Indo-China War
• Resistance War Against America
• The American War

Fortunately, the Library of Congress has designated the official subject heading as Vietnam War, 1961-1975. Using that in the catalog will be most beneficial, but when searching in other venues, keep in mind the possible other terminology that is used.

Some tips to get you started:

• Understand your assignment. What kind of information do you need? Peer-reviewed journal articles, literary criticism, biographical information?

• Know your deadlines. It is so much easier to do your research early so that you will have plenty of time to write your paper.

• Develop your topic. Narrowing your broad idea to a specific question you want to research will save you much time and effort.

• Brainstorm keywords. Think about keywords related to each aspect of your topic to help in searching.
