Technically, the term "animal rights" refers to the belief that animals, like humans, have basic rights. However, in common usage the term is often used more broadly to mean the "humane treatment of animals." This Research Guide will encompass the broader definition.

For a broad overview of the topic, refer to

Encyclopedia of Animal Rights and Animal Welfare
(also available in hard copy  Young Reference  HV 4708 .E53 2010 2 vols.)
Brief articles on all aspects of animal rights; most articles have a
bibliography for further reading on that specific topic.

Encyclopedia of Bioethics
(also available in hard copy:  Young Reference QH 332 .E52 2004 5 vols.)

You can also browse the shelves in Young Library for the call numbers that fall
between HV 4703 and HV 4930.
