WorldCat Local: Functions

We've loaded this guide with searching tips. Read extensive descriptions of WorldCat Local features. Learn what the Working Group is doing.

Set up your WorldCat account

Many functions are available once you set-up your account:

  • lists (public and private; watch other's lists)
  • tagging
  • write reviews and rate items
  • favorite libraries

Filtering through your results

WorldCat can quickly return an enormous results set!  Use facets on the left to quickly narrow the results.

List facets:

  • Author, year, content, language
  • Show more / if need be you can keep clicking for more until you finally see all the facets
  • Facets by topic, for example in this list / topics are formed according to LC classification, so, alas, sometimes you can't get any more granular than American lit.

You can also resort your results.  If you're not seeing what you expected, be sure to resort by Relevance Only.

Go go go!

Stuff about the mobile version...

List Mania!

Only items from WorldCat.org display in public lists.  If you add any items from other databases you'll have to proxy your lists for any off-campus viewing.  Items obtained via remote connection to databases aren't available for listing (you'll have no box to check).

From lists you can export records to EndNote, print, RSS, etc.

You can search for other people's lists.

You increased your use of ILL

WCL has driven ILL statistics up significantly most of the ILL traffic from WCL is from graduate students, staff and faculty

Here's the increase in patron ILL requests since we started using WorldCat Local in 2009 (report forthcoming):

Working with results

  • Results sorting
    • Location AND relevance (default sort)
    • Relevance only
    • Etc.
  • You can also limit your searches to University of Kentucky Libraries or to Faster Interlibrary Loan (always always you get U.K. holdings, if we have them, regardless of how you limit or sort)
  • filtering results (facets)
  • making lists; exporting records; RSS feeds
  • tagging records
  • formatting citations

The WorldCat record

  • Local info (holdings, links)
  • the record will sometimes show links from other libraries; these might work for you, too
  • tags and subject descriptors
  • preview item
  • permalink
  • add to social media
  • want to drive to Georgetown or wherever close by? ("Find it in libraries globally")
  • other editions and formats
  • Google previews
  • Find more information about:  get author profiles: try Theda or Tom

FRBR-izing (furr-burr)

FRBR (functional requirements for bibliographic records)
  • View all editions and formats.
  • It's just searching for matches using the same title and author.
  • Most times it works well, sometimes it doesn't.
  • For example Great Gatsby "view all editions and formats"
  • If you "view other libraries that hold this item" know that holdings are merged! unless you specify "Just this edition."
  • Full records will also sometimes list related editions: "Similar editions held by University of Kentucky Libraries"

New functions to consider

  • Course reserve lists (only for print reserves)
  • display local fields from bib record (590, etc.)

As of February 16, 2011, you can request that your local bibliographic data be stored at OCLC to prepare for upcoming WorldCat Local enhancements that will let your users search and display your local data. Local bibliographic data you can batchload includes local subject headings, uniform titles, and more. You must be fully subscribed to WorldCat Local and maintain unique persistent local system bibliographic numbers in your records

  • customize the mobile display

Libraries that maintain a full WorldCat Local subscription have the option to customize their mobile presence. In addition, the production version includes more item information than before, with easier navigation to previous and next items within a results set. Users can see location, shelf status, call number and levels of availability; and can place a hold, request the item or e-mail citations for any content that does not require authentication.

· A-Z list functionality enabling users to search for eJournals by title or ISSN, search for articles using citation information, or search for ebooks using the title or ISBN (depends on WCKB)

Related considertations:

  • Digital Commons (our UKnowledge) subscribers will now be able to select the high-value scholarly content, including library-hosted peer review journal content, they would like to make discoverable via WorldCat.
