Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended, is a federal law that protects the privacy and confidentiality of personally identifiable information contained within student education records.
In addition to state library privacy laws, a Federal statute - FERPA covers student records at colleges and universities. FERPA prohibits the release of student records without the express written consent of the student involved. Although FERPA does not specially mention library records, many institutions have interpreted the statue as including library records.

FERPA at the University of Kentucky
The University of Kentucky complies with FERPA's confidentiality protections and adheres to procedures dealing with student education records and directory information recommended by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. This law applies to K-12 as well as post-secondary education and is commonly known as the Buckley Amendment.

The most prominent of the federal protections for student privacy is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), also known as the "Buckley Amendment," FERPA protects the confidentiality of student records to some extent, while also giving students the right to review their own records.
