This research guide  was created for students in GWS 200, Introduction to Gender and Women's Studies.  It will introduce you to some basic resources for finding and evaluating information. Much of the emphasis is on library resources that will help you identify credible information sources, especially commercial databases that index and abstract scholarly and professional literature. However, an increasing amount of useful information is published directly on the WWW.  This guide is also designed to help you search the Web more efficiently and critically analyze and choose the information you find there.  Although this guide is by no means exhaustive, the resources listed here provide a good starting point for your research.

Although you can search our catalog, databases and Google with simple keywords, it is often more efficient and effective to search subject terms if you know them.  The following are some of the subject terms you can use in InfoKat and many of the periodical databases to which we subscribe.

A search of InfoKat using a combination of keywords and/or subject words will quickly give you an idea of what books, videos, manuscripts, government documents and other resources you have access to through the UK Libraries. 

For example, search "military AND women."  You get 426 hits (03/2011), and some of the titles seem of somewhat dubious interest.  But if you click on the title "Women and military service [electronic resource] : a history, analysis, and overview of key issues" by M.C. Devilbiss, you can see one of the subjects assigned to describe this title is United States--Armed Forces--Women.  When you click on this link, you can get to the106 titles having been assigned this subject such as the following:
