Brexit

On June 23, 2016, the United Kingdom voted on a referendum to either remain in or leave the European Union. With over 70% voter turnout, the majority voted to exit the EU in what has since come to be known as "Brexit". Issues surrounding the referendum include the recent economic downturn in the EU, business regulations and restrictions, and immigrants to the EU. The process will be gradual, with full removal expected by 2019.

There have been a number of controversial problems after the vote, most notably the resignation of then-Prime Minister David Cameron and an almost immediate drop in the value of the British Pound, housing market, and other economic indicators, though these have since mostly recovered and it is still to early to determine any lasting effects. There has also been regional conflict, with Northern Ireland and Scotland overwhelmingly voting to remain and England and Wales voting to leave.
