UpToDate: Getting Started

About UpToDate

UpToDate is a clinical decision support resource that is authored and peer-reviewed by physicians who are recognized experts in their medical
specialties. These physicians serve on the faculty of medical schools, practice medicine, and in some cases conduct research. Drawing on their extensive experience, physician authors and editors begin with a structured clinical question, placing the latest evidence about the topic in context with the larger body of available evidence. Authors synthesize that evidence into recommendations clinicians can use to diagnose and treat their patients.

The team is supported by dozens of full-time deputy editors – physicians who continuously update the content in their disciplines and provide the final level of peer review. Deputy editors ensure topics are developed according to the rigorous UpToDate editorial process, and they grade treatment recommendations and their underlying evidence using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. At least three physician experts review every topic before it is published. At the top of every UpToDate topic and recommendation, the names of the contributing author, section editor and deputy editor are displayed to ensure complete transparency.

UpToDate is a product of Wolters-Kluwer, a global information services company.  The company is headquartered in Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands. Wolters Kluwer in its current form was founded in 1987 with a merger between Kluwer Publishers and Wolters Samson.
