2nd floor, Classroom 1 at the Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library
WHAT: The Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is an international communal updating of Wikipedia content on subjects related to art and feminism. The University of Kentucky Libraries will host an Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in Lexington on Monday, March 20, 2017, at the Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library from 9 am to 5 pm.
WHY: This international event is designed to improve coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia and encourage female editorship. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. The lack of female participation has led to an alarming dearth of content about women and art in the world’s most popular online research tool. Since 2014, over 280 Art+Feminism edit-a-thons have taken place across the world, creating and improving an estimated 4,600 articles.
HOW: Register through Eventbrite in advance. On March 20, bring your laptop or other devices, your power cord, and ideas for entries and log in here. We will provide beginner tutorials, editing support from experienced and expert Wikipedians, reference materials, lists of women artists from Kentucky who need better Wikipedia entries, and refreshments. Editing with a room full of inspired others is addictive, fun, and uplifting! You can stay as long or as little as your schedule allows.
WHO: People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate, particularly transgender and cisgender women. The Lexington Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is organized by Melissa Adler, Abbye Allan, Karyn Hinkle, Kathryn Lybarger, and Ida Lucille Sell. Join the University of Kentucky Libraries and members of the School of Information Science, the department of Gender & Women's Studies, the School of Art & Visual Studies, and others as we improve coverage of women in the arts.
