HON 251-006: Law, Ethics, & Entrepreneurship: Start Here

Fall 2020

Introduction

This guide will introduce you to a few basic concepts about research at the University of Kentucky Libraries. In particular, this guide will help you find sources for your Legal Issues Audit.

If you would like more in-depth information, consider taking this free, self-paced 40 minute course.

If you have questions about finding sources at any point for any need, feel free to contact your librarian or use the Ask Us service.

Developing Search Terms

When you have a topic in mind, it's a good idea to start thinking about search terms.

Search terms can be found by scanning:

  • Your initial topic ideas,
  • Encyclopedia and other sources used when conducting background research (the Gale Virtual Reference Library is a great place to start!),
  • Bibliographies found at the end of books and articles,

You can also use a thesaurus to identify synonyms or brainstorm keywords with a friend, instructor, or librarian.

Become a Library Power User

All students in the College have access to a variety of resources, and below are a few basic things to get you started.

Make sure you can access all your accounts.

  • Your InfoKat account: find due dates, renew books, see any fines, track your requests, save records and searches. Learn more about your borrowing privileges.
  • Your linkblue account: get off-campus access to databases, articles, e-books, and more.
  • Your ILLiad account (uses your linkblue credentials): place orders, renew loans, access articles. Learn more about Interlibrary Loan.
  • It's a great idea to create your own accounts in EBSCOhost, JSTOR, Web of Science Core Collection, and other resources to save searches, records, make lists, etc.

You can get in-depth research help.

Know that you can request library materials from around the world.

  • You have access to items in our campus libraries, storage, or from other libraries which you can request to pick up at any campus library.
  • You can request access to items that UK Libraries doesn't own via your ILLiad account.

You can use rooms in the library for your work. [currently unavailable due to the pandemic]

If you have any questions, please ask your librarian! We're here to help you.
