Wildcat Histories: Archiving University of Kentucky Student Voices

The legacy of student voices, experiences, and activities deserves to be preserved. This LibGuide from UK Libraries provides you and your student organization with easy-to-follow steps to do that.

Benefits of Working with an Archivist

Student organizations have the option to add their materials to Special Collections or to manage their materials themselves. If it has been decided to manage materials individually, the information included on this page is meant to serve as resources for self-archiving. The benefit of working alone, is materials are managed by the organization that created them. Further resources can be found here: Copy of _7 steps Instructional Sheet final.pdf

The benefits of working with a university archivist, are the quality of the maintenance, and quality of the processing. A university archivist has the resources and experience to process your materials and add them to university history, therefore further solidifying the student organization’s role on campus. The materials are also stored to maintain their longevity. Adding your organization to the archives allows you to share your group's mission and successes through your own voice.

The drawback of adding materials to university archives is that the materials are no longer “owned” by the organization that created them. The materials are still accessible but require more steps to view them.
