Primary sources are original materials and/or information on which other research is based. It includes journal articles of original research, conference papers, dissertations, government documents, experiments & lab reports, photographs, field notes & observations, first-person accounts, conference proceedings, technical reports, and patents. Data sets that have been tabulated but not interpreted are also considered primary sources.
Secondary sources have analyzed, evaluated, interpreted, re-packaged, summarized, or reorganized information reported by researchers in the primary literature. Examples of secondary resources are review articles and journals, textbooks, compilation of data (e.g., CDC statistics), databases, and indexes.
