Appalachia Special Collections: Images

The Russell Lee: Wheelwright, KY Photographic Collection consists of 65 black and white 8X10 photographs. The content of the photographs included citizens of Wheelwright, Kentucky and the local coal mining industry. The pictures were taken within a short period of time during the mid-1940's. On the back of each photograph, there is a label identifying the subject and date.

The Jenkins, Kentucky Photographic Collection (dated 1911-1930, undated; 2 cubic feet; 4 boxes) consists of photographs of Jenkins, Kentucky and constitutes a visual history of the coal-mining community. Originally photographed for Consolidation Coal Company, the 204 images document life in Jenkins from 1911 to 1913. All images are mounted on 9 X 12 gray matting board. A handwritten identification of place and date the photograph was taken is handwritten underneath each image.

The collection consists of twenty-two black and white sliver prints of Kentucky National Guardsmen and Harlan County mine workers during a strike in 1939.
