Disability and Debility in Appalachia: Academic Journals

Appalachian Journal, founded in 1972, is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed quarterly featuring field research, roundtable discussions, interviews, first-person essays, and scholarly studies of history, politics, economics, culture, folklore, literature, music, ecology, and a variety of other topics, as well as poetry, photography, and reviews of books, films, and recordings dealing with the region of the Appalachian mountains.

Disability & Society is an international disability studies journal providing a focus for debate about such issues as human rights, discrimination, definitions, policy and practices. It appears against a background of constant change in the ways in which disability is viewed and responded to.

Disability Studies Quarterly (DSQ) is the journal of the Society for Disability Studies (SDS). It is a multidisciplinary and international journal of interest to social scientists, scholars in the humanities and arts, disability rights advocates, and others concerned with the issues of people with disabilities. It represents the full range of methods, epistemologies, perspectives, and content that the field of disability studies embraces. DSQ is committed to developing theoretical and practical knowledge about disability and to promoting the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society.

The Journal of Appalachian Studies (JAS) is a refereed, multidisciplinary publication which seeks to provide a written forum for quality scholarship on Appalachian history, culture, and society. The official journal of the Appalachian Studies Association (ASA), the JAS is published twice per year by the University of Illinois Press for the ASA with support from Marshall University. The Journal of Appalachian Studies supersedes earlier publications of the Appalachian Studies Association, including Proceedings and the Journal of the Appalachian Studies Association (JASA).

The Journal of Appalachian Health (JAH) is a fully peer-reviewed, open-access journal centered on the health and well-being of people living in the 13-state, 423-county region of Appalachia—and in other resource-limited settings. The Journal is available without charge to authors and readers, who are welcome to use the information within it to improve well-being across the region and in comparable regions across the globe. We work from within the region to publish information by and for the people of Appalachia. The Journal receives generous financial support from the Appalachian Regional Commission.

Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved (JHCPU) is a peer-reviewed journal focusing on contemporary health care issues of medically underserved communities. JHCPU addresses such diverse areas as health care access, quality, costs, legislation, regulations, health promotion, and disease prevention in relation to underserved populations in North and Central America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa. Recently, JHCPU has expanded its scope to include internally dispossessed indigenous populations worldwide, as well as the populations enumerated above. Regular features include research papers and reports, literature reviews, policy analyses, and evaluations of noteworthy health care programs, as well as a regular column written by members of the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved. Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved is the official journal of the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved (ACU).

Focusing on representations of disability, Journal of Literary & Cultural Disability Studies publishes a wide variety of textual analyses that are informed by disability theory and, by extension, experiences of disability. Instrumental in the interdisciplinarity of literary studies, cultural studies, and disability studies, It is an essential disability studies journal for scholars whose work concentrates on the portrayal of disability.

The Journal of Rural Studies publishes cutting-edge research that advances understanding and analysis of contemporary rural societies, economies, cultures and lifestyles; the definition and representation of rurality; the formulation, implementation and contestation of rural policy; and human interactions with the rural environment. The journal is an interdisciplinary publication and welcomes articles from diverse theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches, which engage with and contribute to the rural social science literature, as broadly defined by the disciplines of rural geography, rural sociology, agricultural and rural economics, planning and cognate subjects. The coverage of the journal is global in scope and solicits articles based on empirical research in any part of the world that is of relevance and interest to international readers. The primary audience of the journal are social science researchers, teachers and students interested in contemporary rural issues, processes and experiences.

Medical Anthropology Quarterly is an international journal published by the Society for Medical Anthropology, a section of the American Anthropological Association. The journal publishes research and theory in all areas of medical anthropology. Its first aim is to stimulate development of theory, methods, and debates in medical anthropology and to explore the links between medical anthropology, the broader field of anthropology, and neighboring fields in the humanities, social sciences, and health-related disciplines, including public health, nursing, and clinical practice. The journal is committed to scholarship that seeks to undo the structures of white supremacy, and (settler) colonialism. We aim to provide space for antiracist and anticolonial praxis, and to amplify the voices and perspectives of underrepresented scholars from around the globe, including in our practices of citation.

Sociology of Health & Illness journal publishes sociological articles on all aspects of health, illness, medicine, and healthcare – particularly those that recognise the diverse nature of society and that address diversity when discussing sampling, recruitment, data analysis, and the implications of findings.
