Geological Surveys
Geological surveys, as per the United States Geological Survey (USGS), are science organizations that provide impartial information on the health of ecosystems and environments, natural hazards that threaten us, natural resources that we rely on, impacts of climate and land-use change, and core science systems that help provide timely, relevant, and useable information. Below are links to a number of geological surveys and related websites that you may find helpful in your research.
- Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) The Kentucky Geological Survey is a state supported research center and public resource within the University of Kentucky. Our mission is to support sustainable prosperity of the Commonwealth, the vitality of its flagship university, and the welfare of its people. We do this by conducting research and providing unbiased information about geologic resources, environmental issues, and natural hazards affecting Kentucky.
- United States Geological Survey (USGS) Established in 1879 by the passing of the Organic Act by Congress. Their responsibilities were to map public lands, examine geological structure, and evaluate mineral resources. Over the next century, their mission expanded to include the research of groundwater, ecosystems, environmental health, natural hazards, climate and land use change.
- Association of American State Geologists (AASG) AASG represents the State Geologists of the 50 United States and Puerto Rico. Founded in 1908, AASG seeks to advance the science and practical application of geology and related earth sciences in the United States and its territories, commonwealths, and possessions.
- EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) Their principal purpose is to provide public Earth science knowledge to support the EU’s competitiveness, social well-being, environmental management and international commitments.

- American Association of Petroleum Geologists A professional association for explorationists, AAPG is about the science of petroleum. AAPG's membership is made up of about 40,000 members in 129 countries in the upstream energy industry who collaborate and compete.
- American Geosciences Institute The Institute provides information services to geoscientists, serves as a voice of shared interests in the profession, plays a major role in strengthening geoscience education, and strives to increase public awareness of the vital role the geosciences play in society’s use of resources, resilience to natural hazards, and the health of the environment.

- Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists The Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists (AEG) contributes to its members’ professional success and the public welfare by providing leadership, advocacy, and applied research in environmental and engineering geology.
- Geological Society of America The GSA advances geoscience research and discovery, service to society, stewardship of Earth, and the geosciences profession.
- International Association of Hydrological Sciences IAHS is a vibrant international community of hydrologists. Furthermore the Association shares activities in a number of fields: with several IUGG Commissions, with some of the other seven Associations in the IUGG family, and also with a number of associations outside IUGG, including the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) and the International Association of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR). These linkages demonstrate that IAHS has a broad base for its science activities.
- Mineralogical Society of America MSA was founded in 1919 for the advancement of mineralogy, crystallography, geochemistry, petrology, and promotion of their uses in other sciences, industry, and the arts. It encourages fundamental research about natural materials; supports the teaching of mineralogical concepts and procedures; and attempts to raise the scientific literacy of society with respect to issues involving mineralogy in the widest sense.
- Paleontological Society The Paleontological Society is an international nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to the advancement of the science of paleontology: invertebrate and vertebrate paleontology, micropaleontology, and paleobotany.
- Seismological Society of America The Seismological Society of America (SSA) was born in the aftershocks of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, as engineers, mathematicians and geologists united to learn more about the devastating event. From these earliest days, SSA has been committed to advancing seismology and sharing research with the public to help build an earthquake-aware world.
- Society for Sedimentary Geology SEPM is a 501c3 non-profit society that focuses on the dissemination of information about and research in sedimentary geoscience and related fields. SEPM enriches professionals and students with membership levels and resources for connecting, networking, publishing and growing intellectually.
