The DOI Handbook is the primary source of information about the DOI System. It discusses the components and operation of the system, and provides a central point of reference for technical information. The Handbook is updated regularly. The current version is Version 4.4.1 (first released 5 October 2006). Version 5 is planned for release by the end of 2009. The DOI name 10.1000/182 identifies the current version of the Handbook.
CrossRef is also the official DOI® link registration agency for scholarly and professional publications. It operates a cross-publisher citation linking system that allows a researcher to click on a reference citation on one publisher’s platform and link directly to the cited content on another publisher’s platform, subject to the target publisher’s access control practices. This website includes a flash video explaining CrossRef and DOI.
