Generative AI Policy for OER

Recipients of the OER Grant and other authors who publish OER through UK Libraries are responsible for the quality and accuracy of their own materials. If an author chooses to use any generative AI tools in the creation of the project, they should follow these guidelines.

Transparency

Authors must label any use of generative AI, clearly identifying what part of the material was AI-generated and what tool was used. If possible, the author should also note where that tool gets the material it generates output from.

Copyright

Human authorship is required for a work to be eligible for copyright in the United States. Portions of an OER project that were solely generated by AI must be noted as part of the public domain, regardless of the license on the rest of the work. An author may not claim ownership of or apply a Creative Commons license to material solely generated by AI.

Licenses

Some AI tools may have agreements or licenses restricting what can be done with their output. Authors are responsible for knowing the specific rules and institutional restrictions on any tools they use, and are expected not to incorporate any AI-generated material into their projects that violates these rules.

Authors are responsible for following all policies and procedures outlined in the University of Kentucky Administrative Regulations related to the Use of Technology Resources, including consultation of the UK Approved Software list and use conditions.
