About the guide

This guide is a professional development toolkit based on liaison librarian activities, but is applicable to many library service points and employees. These professional development resources support the four core categories of our liaison model: Outreach and Engagement, Research Services, Scholarly Communications, and Teaching and Learning.

Core competencies

Outreach & Engagement

Build connections to identify partners and facilitate community in assigned areas.

  • Communicate consistently with assigned areas to assess needs to develop and maintain relevant, high-quality services.
  • Collaborate and establish partnerships to connect library services and resources with academic and research programs.
  • Maintain awareness of activities and events in assigned areas to impact and support engagement.

Research Services

Expand knowledge of research methods to support users in navigating the research process.

  • Maintain knowledge of resources, services, citation management software, and other research tools.
  • Provide personalized consultations, services, and referrals.
  • Develop and improve research programs and services.

Scholarly Communications

Promote and advise on the process of creating, sharing, and evaluating academic research and knowledge.

  • Maintain an understanding of how scholarly communication works, including different publishing models, digital tools, and emerging trends in assigned areas.
  • Advise on scholarly communications principles and practices that may include, but are not limited to, open access publishing, funding mandates, data management, author(s) rights, and copyright in assigned areas.
  • Collaborate to highlight and disseminate research, raise awareness around scholarly communication issues, and produce, when possible, with partners in assigned areas.

Teaching & Learning

Design and implement pedagogically appropriate instruction utilizing a variety of different instructional methods.

  • Conduct instruction using appropriate instructional methods, frameworks, tools, and resources.
  • Maintain knowledge of curriculum initiatives in assigned areas.
  • Collaborate with assigned areas to integrate information literacy and/or research skills into the curriculum.
  • Develop and deliver effective instructional programs and learning materials.
