About Academic Video Online

Academic Video Online (also known as AVON) is a subscription video collection from Proquest. AVON has more than 80,000+ video titles in subject areas including anthropology, business, counseling, film, health, history, music, theatre, dance, and more.

Creating an account

To create a new account, first go to the sign in page by clicking the user icon at the top right of any page on the site. Then click the “Sign Up” link. Your associated email address must be unique within our system. If you already have a user account but have forgotten your password, click the “Forgot your password?” link on the sign in page to reset it.

Accessibility

AVON has added audio description for visually impaired users for its most popular films. If you or someone in your class needs an accommodation for a particular assigned video, please notify lib-er@lsv.uky.edu. We will forward this request to Proquest, and an audio described version of that video will be created and added to Academic Video Online, at no charge from Proquest. They aim to fulfill all requests within 2-3 weeks.

Embedding a video

If you have the necessary permissions to add content to a course management system, you can link to or embed a video from AVON. Click the Share icon, the far left option in the bottom right menu, in the video player. A menu will open that will give you a link either to share or embed, based on your selection.

You can also search for AVON films to embed directly from Canvas.

From your Canvas page, click "Edit"

Click this plugin icon

 

Choose "Alexander Street Video" (or "View All" if it isn't listed)

Search for the video title you want to add

Choose medium or large size

 

Click "Save"

Rights and Restrictions

  • Classroom viewing allowed? Yes
  • Public performance rights? Yes, if no fees charged for admissions
  • Concurrent usage restrictions? No

Creating clips

Viewers can easily create a clip from a movie in AVON. To create a detailed clip, select the Clips tab in the main header and ‘Create a New Clip’.

Give your clip a useful title. Indicate the start and end times for the clip. Add some annotation or notes to give the clip some context. Indicate how widely you want this clip to be shared - just you, your class/group, your institution, or everyone, then hit Save. Please note, you must be signed in to your User Profile to create or edit a clip.

AVON does not allow for the creation of playlists at this time.

You must be signed in to a personal account to create clips.
