Streaming Media at the University of Kentucky Libraries: Kanopy

Identifies possible source of streaming media

About Kanopy

Kanopy is one of the largest providers of documentary and independent films to universities and public libraries.

Creating an account

Go to the University of Kentucky Kanopy site and select Sign Up. Kanopy allows for social login (via Facebook or Google) or via email. If you sign up via email, you do not have to use a uky.edu address, but you will receive a verification email which is needed to continue set up. Note: if you do not see the verification email, check your spam folder.

If you have access to Kanopy through multiple libraries (for instance, through your home public library), all your library accounts can be tied to your one Kanopy account. To add a library, hover over your account name and select My Memberships from the drop down menu. Select Add a Membership, which will open a search bar where you can search for additional libraries. If the library has access to Kanopy, you will get an add option. After you add the library, there will be a button to the right of the library name that reads Inactive. Select that button and enter your library access information for that library.

See the Kanopy site for more detailed instructions on creating an account and managing multiple libraries.

Creating clips and playlists

Viewers can easily create a clip from a movie or a playlist of clips and/or full-length films within Kanopy. Below the video viewer is an option to Create Clip/Playlist.

Choose either existing and create new playlist

Whether you're only creating one clip or multiple, you'll need to do this within a playlist. If you are adding to an existing playlist, click Add Video to add the video on this current video page to your playlist. You will see the number of clips change when adding the video. If you are creating a new playlist, it will automatically add the current video page once you select Create.

To trim the video to a clip once it's in the playlist, select Edit Playlist. You can then either 1) enter in the time codes manually or 2) click the player to start the film. When you want your clip to start, click Capture next to Start Time. Then click Capture next to Stop Time when you want the clip to end.

You will need to be logged into an individual account to use this feature.

For more information, see the Kanopy site.
