In this innovative study of the press during the French Revolutionary crisis of the early 1830s, Jeremy Popkin shows that newspapers played a crucial role in defining a new repertoire of identities--for workers, women, and members of the middle classes--that redefined Europe's public sphere. Nowhere was this process more visible than in Lyon, the great manufacturing center where the aftershocks of the July Revolution of 1830 were strongest. In July 1830 Lyon's population had rallied around its liberal newspaper and opposed the conservative Restoration government. In less than two years, however, Lyon's press and its public opinion, like those of the country as a whole, had become irrevocably fragmented. Popkin shows how the structure of the "journalistic field" in liberal society multiplied political conflicts and produced new tensions between the domains of politics and culture. New periodicals appeared claiming to speak for workers, for women, and for the local interests of Lyon. The public was becoming inherently plural with the emergence of new "imagined communities" that would dominate French public life well into the twentieth century. Jeremy Popkin is well known for his earlier studies of journalism during the eighteenth century and the French Revolution. Periodicals were an integral part of eighteenth-century European civilization. This volume brings together original articles in English and French dealing with the press both in the main centers of Enlightenment thought and in such often-neglected countries as Portugal and Sweden. The contributions span the long eighteenth century, from Germany in the 1690s to Britain in the post-Napoleonic era. They cover the full range of the period's press, including manuscript newsletters, political gazettes, learned journals and revolutionary propaganda sheets. João Lisboa and Marie-Christine Skuncke show how periodicals allowed the circulation of news and political criticism even in societies such as Portugal and Sweden, where audiences were limited and censorship was severe; Anne-Marie Mercier-Faivre's study of press coverage of the Ottoman Empire shows that news reports gave a picture of 'oriental despotism' very different from the literary construct of Montesquieu's Lettres persanes; Bernadette Fort's essay on art criticism and Martin Stuber's analysis of the correspondence of a learned journal's editor broaden our understanding of the place of periodicals in the period's high culture. The revolutionary era brought major innovations in the press although, as Maria Lúcia Pallares-Burke shows, older genres such as the 'spectator' were adapted to the new conditions. In the Great Depression, beehives provided food and bartering goods for many farm families, and during World War II, the War Food Administration urged beekeepers to conserve every ounce of beeswax their bees provided, as more than a million pounds a year were being used in the manufacture of war products ranging from waterproofing products to tape. The bee remains a bellwether in modern America. Like so many other insects and animals, the bee population was decimated by the growing use of chemical pesticides in the 1970s. Nevertheless, beekeeping has experienced a revival as natural products containing honey and beeswax have increased the visibility and desirability of the honey bee. Still a powerful representation of success, the industrious honey bee continues to serve both as a source of income and a metaphor for globalization as America emerges as a leader in the Information Age.

This exciting wilderness adventure was inspired by true accounts of the near fatal adoption of Kentucky pioneer Daniel Boone by Chief Blackfish, War Chief of the Shawnee Indian Nation, on the periphery of the American Revolution. It follows the capture, adoption and escape of Boone and the siege of Fort Boonesborough by the Shawnee that came thereafter. During the severe Kentucky winter of 1777-78 frontier legend Daniel Boone was captured by a Shawnee war party who were on their way to annihilate the fort at Boonesborough under direction of their British allies. In order to protect the settlers and save the fort, Boone surrendered himself and 28 men to Chief Blackfish. Boone was considered perhaps the most prized trophy an Indian could attain at that time. Chief Blackfish was more interested in flaunting his prize before the British and the other Indian tribes of the region, so he offered Boone the opportunity of proving himself worthy to be a chief's son. In a series of grueling tests of manhood, Boone was pitted against the top braves of the tribe. After successfully passing the rites, Boone was adopted as the son of Chief Blackfish and given the Shawnee name of Sheltowee. This brought him to another near death situation. He had saved the men, escaped death by the British as well as the Indians, but was now considered a traitor by several of the pioneers.To fulfill his mission, Boone had to escape from the Indians, make his way through the wilderness with a war party hot on his trail; warn the fort, and prepare for a siege by 600 warring savages, who had been provided weapons and incentive by the conniving British Governor, "Hair-buyer" Hamilton. The story plays out at the historic siege on Fort Boonesborough.
